Context

Halo was developed to rethink the everyday pen holder, replacing clutter with a minimal design. The goal was to deliver a refined desk accessory that showcases well-crafted pens rather than concealing them, designed with elevated materials and an aesthetic inspired by 70s Italian design.

Research

A personal workspace, desk, or studio is often also an extension of one’s personality. From the equipment that you own, the gadgets, to the material and build quality of the furniture in the space.

By observing people, I’ve found that on average, only 2-3 pens are in use. The rest of the clutter is collected over time because pen holders usually resemble small bins, promoting people to “collect“ clutter.

Approach

Halo’s design approach strips a pen holder to its most essential points:

a concave base to house the bottom of the pen, a higher rim to keep the pens upright and together. Everything else is exposed to show off the beautiful pens you own.

Inspired by 70s Italian interior design. The prominent use of rounded forms, elegant proportions, darker woods, and chrome.
